Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Osman Adil Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Osman Adil had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1891/92, at about 19, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 80 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1893/94, places Osman Adil in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Osman Adil to Beykoz from 1895 to 1905. The last post was in Istanbul again in 1905/06.
Pay rose from 80 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to a peak of 300 in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Beykoz, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 13 years the salaries add up to 36,960 kuruş, 48 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
