Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1880/81 (AH 1298) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Abdullah Kamil Efendi was the child of a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 14, in 1894/95, Abdullah Kamil began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1896/97, places Abdullah Kamil in Istanbul, the birthplace, as an official (Memur), where the entries run to 1898/99. Abdullah Kamil then moved to Beşiktaş, Arnavutkoy and Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1899 to 1904, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru) in 1901/02. The last post was in Drama in 1904/05.
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to 300 in 1903/04, the peak, as Posta Memuru in Thessaloniki, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 200 kuruş. Over nine years the salaries add up to 15,240 kuruş, 28 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned.
