Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1879/80 (AH 1297) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Raik Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Mehmet Raik had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote French as well as Turkish.
At about 16, in 1896/97, Mehmet Raik began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1896/97, places Mehmet Raik in Istanbul, the birthplace, as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), where the entries run to 1899/1900. The last posts were in Babiali from 1900 to 1906.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 500 in 1900/01, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Babiali, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
