Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1879/80 (AH 1297), Ahmet Rüşdi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army major (binbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Rüşdi also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Ahmet Rüşdi began work in Sivas in 1895/96, at about 16, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 800 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1900/01, with Ahmet Rüşdi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Hicaz. The last posts were in Kalatzumrud from 1901 to 1904. Hicaz, about 2,400 km from Istanbul, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
Pay rose from 800 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to a peak of 1,000 in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Kalatzumrud, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, four years of salary come to 40,800 kuruş, 1.7 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
