Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1878/79 (AH 1296), Mustafa Nazif Bey came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a medrese teacher (müderris). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1894/95, Mustafa Nazif began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. From 1896/97 to 1903/04 every annual entry places Mustafa Nazif in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), from 1903/04 in the documents office (Evrak Kalemi).
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 100 in 1899/1900, in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Istanbul, when fewer than 1 per cent of paid officials earned less.
