Life#
Ahmet Nurettin Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1859/60 (AH 1276) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took 14 years, at the Darulfunun; Ahmet Nurettin also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration). Of the 5,146 officials with a school, 2 studied at Darulfunun.
Work began in Istanbul in 1883/84, at about 24, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1883/84, places Ahmet Nurettin in Beyoğlu as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1897/98, with a rise to official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in 1895/96. From 1898 to 1905 the annual entries place Ahmet Nurettin in Babiali.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to a peak of 1,300 in 1904/05, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Babiali, when 93 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 22 years of salary come to 198,240 kuruş, 1.5 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
