Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1859/60 (AH 1276), Mehmet Ali Bey came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 34, in 1893/94, Mehmet Ali began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. Fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 34 or older. Every annual entry from 1893/94 to 1899/1900 places Mehmet Ali in Istanbul, the birthplace, first as an official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru), from 1894/95 as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur), from 1895/96 as Emanet Kitabet Muavini and from 1899/1900 as Pul Basmemuru.
