Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1855/56 (AH 1272), Hasan Sıtkı Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a soldier (asker). Hasan Sıtkı had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and knew four languages, Turkish in writing, Russian in speech and Arabic and Persian a little. Russian was rare in the service, known to 19 of the 5,211 officials.
Work began in Istanbul in 1871/72, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1873/74 to 1906/07 places Hasan Sıtkı in the same post, official (Memur), in Istanbul, the birthplace. A career like this is rare; 13 of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more kept one title in one place throughout.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to a peak of 800 in 1902/03, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 34 years of salary come to 238,680 kuruş, 1.2 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
