Life#
Ömer Faik Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1855/56 (AH 1272) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ömer Faik also attended the telegraph school, and wrote Turkish and had some knowledge of Arabic and French.
At about 16, in 1871/72, Ömer Faik began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 120 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1873/74, with Ömer Faik as an official (Memur) in Istanbul, the birthplace. Ömer Faik then moved to Bursa, Kastamonu and Çerkeş from 1874 to 1879, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1874/75 and to chief official (Başmemur) in 1877/78. The last posts were in Safranbolu from 1879 to 1882.
Pay rose from 120 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to a peak of 600 in 1877/78, as Başmemur in Çerkeş, when half the paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1881/82.
