Life#
Anastaş Nikolaidis Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1837/38 (AH 1253), into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community, and the father's occupation was "Bahcivan". Schooling took four years, at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi); Anastaş Nikolaidis also wrote Greek (Rum) as well as Turkish.
Anastaş Nikolaidis began work in Istanbul in 1851/52, at about 15, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1869/70 to 1885/86 places Anastaş Nikolaidis in Istanbul, the birthplace, first as an official (Memur), from 1876/77 as a chief official (Başmemur).
