Life#
Hüseyin Azmi Efendi was born in Kastamonu in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a policeman (polis). At about 20, in 1895/96, Hüseyin Azmi began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1895/96, places Hüseyin Azmi in Beyoğlu as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), where the entries run to 1904/05. The annual lists then follow Hüseyin Azmi to Al-Faw (Fav), Baghdad (Bağdat) and Aleppo (Halep) from 1905 to 1910, with a rise to director (Müdür) in 1905/06. The last posts were in Istanbul from 1910 to 1912.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to a peak of 2,250 in 1905/06, as Müdür in Al-Faw, when 97 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 18 years of salary come to 246,600 kuruş, 2.3 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years, a level reached by fewer than 7 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The final annual entry is for 1911/12.
