Life#
Ahmet Hamdi Efendi was born in Plovdiv (Filibe) in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Ahmet Hamdi also attended the telegraph school and wrote French as well as Turkish.
At about 25, in 1900/01, Ahmet Hamdi began work in Jaffa (Yafa), paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1900/01, places Ahmet Hamdi in Jaffa as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Jerusalem (Kudüs) from 1901 to 1906.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1900/01, as Muhabere Memuru in Jaffa, when 31 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
