Life#
Ahmet Raif Efendi was born in Plovdiv (Filibe) in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Ahmet Raif began work in Xanthi (İskeçe) in 1892/93, at about 17, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1895/96, to 1898/99, every annual entry places Ahmet Raif in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Xanthi.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1895/96, as Muhabere Memuru in Xanthi, when 17 per cent of paid officials earned less.
