Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1880/81 (AH 1298) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Yusuf Kenan Efendi was the child of a senior army captain (kolağası). Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Yusuf Kenan also attended the telegraph school, wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Yusuf Kenan began work in Jerusalem (Kudüs) in 1900/01, at about 19, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1900/01, places Yusuf Kenan in Jerusalem as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1903/04. The last posts were in Aydın from 1904 to 1906.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to a peak of 540 in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Aydın, when 62 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
