Life#
Hasan Tahsin Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1870/71 (AH 1287) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a senior army captain (kolağası). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1890/91, at about 20, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1895/96, with Hasan Tahsin as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Adana. Hasan Tahsin then moved to Jerusalem (Kudüs) from 1897 to 1903, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur). The last post was in Damascus (Şam) in 1903/04.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to 700 in 1903/04, the peak, as Seyyar Memur in Damascus, when three in four paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1903/04; the list of 1904/05 (AH 1322) gives the status word Vefat (death).
