Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1881/82 (AH 1299), Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Hüseyin Hüsnü had 12 years of schooling, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul, attended the telegraph school as well, wrote French as well as Turkish and had some knowledge of English, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1902/03, at about 20, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1902/03 to 1906/07 places Hüseyin Hüsnü in the same post, official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), in Beyoğlu.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1902/03 to 500 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Beyoğlu, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
