Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1881/82 (AH 1299), Ömer Necip Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a customs official (gümrük memuru). Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Ömer Necip also attended the telegraph school and wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1904/05, at about 22, paid from the start, on 100 kuruş a month. From the first annual entry, for 1904/05, to 1907/08, every annual entry places Ömer Necip in the same office, money order office (Havalename Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
