Life

Hasan Efendi was born in Bolu in 1881/82 (AH 1299) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Hasan also attended the telegraph school, wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Hasan began work in Beyoğlu in 1908/09, at about 26, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. From 1908/09 to 1909/10 every annual entry places Hasan in Beyoğlu, first as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), from 1909/10 as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti).

The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1908/09 to 300 in 1909/10, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Beyoğlu, when 15 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1909/10.
