Life#
Ahmet Şemsettin Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1883/84 (AH 1301) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Ahmet Şemsettin also attended the telegraph school, wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 18, in 1902/03, Ahmet Şemsettin began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. From 1902/03 to 1910/11 every annual entry places Ahmet Şemsettin in Beyoğlu, first as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), from 1905/06 in the Hukuk Kalemi.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1902/03 to a peak of 800 in 1909/10, in the Hukuk Kalemi in Beyoğlu, when two in three paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1910/11.
