Life#
Hasan Seyfi Efendi was born in Erzurum in 1883/84 (AH 1301) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a farmer (çiftçi). Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Hasan Seyfi also attended the telegraph school and wrote French as well as Turkish.
Hasan Seyfi began work in Galata in 1905/06, at about 21, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. From the first annual entry, for 1905/06, to 1907/08, every annual entry places Hasan Seyfi in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Galata.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1905/06 to 340 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Galata, when 35 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
