Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1878 (AH 1295) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Şükrü Efendi was the child of a senior clerk (hacegân). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Şükrü also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 27, in 1905/06, Şükrü began work in Galata, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 40 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1906/07, places Şükrü in Galata as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Koprubasi in 1908/09 and Galata again in 1909/10.
The salary went from 40 kuruş a month in 1906/07 to 400 in 1909/10, the peak, as Mukayyit in Galata, when one in three paid officials earned less. Over four years the salaries add up to 7,320 kuruş, 39 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1909/10.
