Life#
Hasan Tevfik Bey was born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a pasha (paşa). Schooling took 12 years, at the Imperial School (Mekteb-i Sultani); Hasan Tevfik also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Unpaid work as a mülazım (apprentice) lasted two years. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places Hasan Tevfik in Istanbul, the birthplace, in the Rusumat Tercume Kalemi. From 1893 to 1911 the annual entries place Hasan Tevfik in Galata.
