Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289), Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Bursa in 1887/88, at about 16, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 75 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Hüseyin Hüsnü as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Istanbul, the birthplace. Next came Bursa from 1893 to 1901, with a rise to Muhabere Memuru in 1895/96. The last posts were in Demirköy (Samakovcuk) from 1902 to 1906, with a rise to chief official (Başmemur) in 1905/06.
The salary went from 75 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 500 in 1905/06, the peak, as Başmemur in Demirköy, when half the paid officials earned less.
