Life#
Mehmet Faik Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Faik also wrote French as well as Turkish.
At about 14, in 1885/86, Mehmet Faik began work in Istanbul, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 6 per cent worked unpaid for seven years or longer. Every annual entry from 1892/93 to 1904/05 places Mehmet Faik in the same office, accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to a peak of 700 in 1904/05, in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Istanbul, when three in four paid officials earned less.
