Mehmet Necati Efendi

Muslim (Müslüman). Born in Alanya (Alaiye) in 1873/74 (AH 1290). On record 1903 to 1908, 5 annual entries.

Life

Born in Alanya (Alaiye) in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Necati Efendi was the child of a sergeant (çavuş). Schooling took 12 years, at the Imperial School (Mekteb-i Sultani); Mehmet Necati also wrote French and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

At about 29, in 1902/03, Mehmet Necati began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Few began so late; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 29 or older. From the first annual entry, for 1903/04, to 1907/08, every annual entry places Mehmet Necati in the same office, control office (Kontrol Kalemi), in Istanbul.

The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1903/04 to 350 in 1906/07, the peak, in the Kontrol Kalemi in Istanbul, when 36 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over five years the salaries add up to 19,200 kuruş, 74 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
