Life#
Mehmet Tevfik Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1867/68 (AH 1284) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Mehmet Tevfik also attended the telegraph school and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 18, in 1885/86, Mehmet Tevfik began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1885/86 to 1906/07 places Mehmet Tevfik in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), from 1888/89 in the register office (Sicil Kalemi) and from 1892/93 in the control office (Kontrol Kalemi).
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to a peak of 500 in 1895/96, in the Kontrol Kalemi in Istanbul, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 22 years of salary come to 109,500 kuruş, 84 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
