Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1867/68 (AH 1284), Macit Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Macit also attended the telegraph school and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1886/87, at about 19, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1886/87, places Macit in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1899/1900, with a rise to a post in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi) in 1887/88. The last posts were in Beirut (Beyrut) and Kosova from 1900 to 1903 and Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1903/04, with a rise to official of a telegraph or post office (Merkez Memuru) in 1901/02.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1886/87 to 800 in 1901/02, the peak, as Merkez Memuru in Kosova, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
