Life#
Born in Erzurum in 1880/81 (AH 1298), Mehmet Kâmil Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Mehmet Kâmil had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Erzurum in 1901/02, at about 20, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1905/06 to 1907/08 places Mehmet Kâmil in the same post, registry clerk (Mukayyit), in Erzurum, the birthplace.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 200 kuruş a month in 1905/06, as Mukayyit in Erzurum, when 8 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over three years the salaries add up to 7,200 kuruş, 48 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
