Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1880/81 (AH 1298), Mahmut Asım Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a director (müdür). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mahmut Asım also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1904/05, at about 23, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1905/06 to 1907/08 places Mahmut Asım in the same office, office of the corresponding secretary (Mektubi Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1905/06, in the Mektubi Kalemi in Istanbul, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over three years the salaries add up to 9,000 kuruş, 61 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
