Life#
Abdürreşid Efendi was born in Izmir (İzmir) in 1882/83 (AH 1300) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a district governor or lieutenant colonel (kaymakam). Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Abdürreşid also attended the telegraph school and wrote French as well as Turkish.
At about 22, in 1905/06, Abdürreşid began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. Both annual entries, for 1905/06 and 1906/07, place Abdürreşid in Istanbul as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti).
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1905/06 to a peak of 340 in 1906/07, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Istanbul, when 35 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
