Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1881/82 (AH 1299), Ahmet Şemsettin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a religious scholar (ulema). Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Ahmet Şemsettin also attended the telegraph school, wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 22, in 1904/05, Ahmet Şemsettin began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. From the first annual entry, for 1904/05, to 1906/07, every annual entry places Ahmet Şemsettin in the same post, official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1904/05 to 400 in 1905/06, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Istanbul, when 38 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
