Life#
Hasan Fehmi Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1881/82 (AH 1299) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an imam. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 19, in 1901/02, Hasan Fehmi began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1904/05 to 1906/07 places Hasan Fehmi in the same post, registry clerk (Mukayyit), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 50 kuruş a month in 1904/05, as Mukayyit in Istanbul, when fewer than 1 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over three years the salaries add up to 1,800 kuruş, 10 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
