Life#
Mehmet Hulusi Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Makinist". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 19, in 1892/93, Mehmet Hulusi began work in Istanbul, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. From 1896/97 to 1910/11 every annual entry places Mehmet Hulusi in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), from 1901/02 as a registry clerk (Mukayyit) and from 1909/10 in the Memurin Kitabeti.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 600 in 1909/10, in the Memurin Kitabeti in Istanbul, when 56 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 15 years of salary come to 42,480 kuruş, 50 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1910/11.
