Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290), Raşit Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Raşit had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 20, in 1893/94, Raşit began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. From 1896/97 to 1903/04 every annual entry places Raşit in Istanbul, the birthplace, first as an official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru), from 1900/01 as an official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru) and from 1903/04 in the money order office (Havalename Kalemi).
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to 300 in 1903/04, the peak, in the Havalename Kalemi in Istanbul, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less.
