Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1878 (AH 1295), Hüseyin Suphi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a district governor or lieutenant colonel (kaymakam). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Hüseyin Suphi began work in Istanbul in 1891/92, at about 14, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 56 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1893/94, with Hüseyin Suphi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Istanbul, the birthplace. Hüseyin Suphi then moved to Thessaloniki (Selanik) and Mount Athos (Aynaroz) from 1895 to 1898, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1897/98. The last posts were in Istanbul again from 1898 to 1904.
Pay rose from 56 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to a peak of 630 in 1897/98, as 3. Müdür in Mount Athos, when three in four paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 400 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
