Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1881/82 (AH 1299) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet Hulusi Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Hulusi also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Ahmet Hulusi began work in Istanbul in 1896/97, at about 15, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1899/1900, to 1903/04, every annual entry places Ahmet Hulusi in the same office, council clerkship (Meclis Kitabeti), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1899/1900 to a peak of 120 in 1903/04, in the Meclis Kitabeti in Istanbul, when 3 per cent of paid officials earned less.
