Life

Şükrü Efendi was born in Tirebolu in 1878 (AH 1295) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Şükrü also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

At about 24, in 1902/03, Şükrü began work in Tirebolu, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 260 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1905/06, to 1907/08, every annual entry places Şükrü in the same post, registry clerk (Mukayyit), in Trabzon.

The salary went from 260 kuruş a month in 1905/06 to 290 in 1906/07, the peak, as Mukayyit in Trabzon, when one in four paid officials earned less. Over three years the salaries add up to 10,080 kuruş, 68 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
