Life#
Born in Siirt in 1878 (AH 1295) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hacı Abdülcemil Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Abdülcemil had nine years of schooling, at the Darulmuallim Mektebi, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration). Of the 5,146 officials with a school, 4 studied at Darulmuallim Mektebi.
Abdülcemil began work in Tripoli (Trablusgarp) in 1903/04, at about 25, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 320 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1905/06 to 1908/09 places Abdülcemil in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Jaffa (Yafa).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 320 kuruş a month in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Jaffa, when 32 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1908/09.
