Life#
Born in Siirt in 1874/75 (AH 1291), Abdurrahman Vafi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Abdurrahman Vafi also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 19, in 1893/94, Abdurrahman Vafi began work in Mecca (Mekke), with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1894/95, to 1905/06, every annual entry places Abdurrahman Vafi in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Mecca.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 450 in 1902/03, as Muhabere Memuru in Mecca, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 12 years of salary come to 50,400 kuruş, 71 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
