Life#
Mustafa Nuri Efendi was born in Avanos in 1855/56 (AH 1272), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. At about 21, in 1877/78, Mustafa Nuri began work in Istanbul, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1877/78, places Mustafa Nuri in Shumen (Şumnu) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Mustafa Nuri to Ordu, Trabzon and Ardino (Eğridere) from 1878 to 1885, then Al Hudaydah (Hudeyde) from 1885 to 1891. Mustafa Nuri then moved to Bayt al-Faqih (Beytülfakih) and Taiz from 1891 to 1898, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1891/92, then Mecca (Mekke) from 1898 to 1905. The last post was in Hafire in 1905/06. The farthest post, Taiz, lay about 2,950 km from Avanos, and fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to 1,000 in 1891/92, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Bayt al-Faqih, when 86 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
