Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288), Hacı Mehmet Hüsamettin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Mehmet Hüsamettin had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), wrote Turkish and spoke Greek (Rum), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in the Duyunu Umumiye Kalemi in Tire in 1886/87, at about 16, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1886/87, places Mehmet Hüsamettin in Tire as Duyunu Umumiye Memuru. The annual lists then follow Mehmet Hüsamettin to Mecca (Mekke) and Sana'a (Sana) from 1890 to 1895. The last posts were in Mecca again from 1895 to 1904. The farthest post, Sana'a, lay about 3,200 km from Istanbul, and fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1886/87 to 750 in 1891/92, the peak, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Sana'a, when three in four paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
