Life#
Mehmet Dursun Efendi was born in Erzurum in 1879/80 (AH 1297) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Aşkale in 1896/97, at about 16, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1896/97, with Mehmet Dursun as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Aşkale. Mehmet Dursun then moved to Tortum, Erzincan, Trabzon and Erzurum, four places in four years, with a rise to Muhabere Memuru in 1898/99. The last posts were in Hınıs from 1901 to 1907, first as Muhabere Memuru, from 1906/07 as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to 600 in 1906/07, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Hınıs, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
