Life#
Born in Bitola (Manastır) in 1879/80 (AH 1297), Ali Niyazi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). At about 13, in 1892/93, Ali Niyazi began work in Bitola, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 6 per cent started at 13 or younger. From 1896/97 to 1901/02 every annual entry places Ali Niyazi in Bitola, the birthplace, first as Muhabere Memuru, from 1899/1900 as a postal official (Posta Memuru), from 1900/01 as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) and from 1901/02 as a chief official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru).
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to 540 in 1901/02, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru in Bitola, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1901/02, the list of 1902/03 (AH 1320) gives the status word Vefat (death).
