Life#
Süleyman Efendi was born in Bitola (Manastır) in 1878 (AH 1295) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Süleyman also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Süleyman began work in Bitola in 1899/1900, at about 21, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1902/03, with Süleyman as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Shkodër (İşkodra), where the entries run to 1905/06. The last post was in Bitola, the birthplace, in 1906/07.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1902/03 to a peak of 350 in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Bitola, when 36 per cent of paid officials earned less.
