Life#
Osman Nuri Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1861/62 (AH 1278), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Osman Nuri also attended the telegraph school and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Osman Nuri began work in Istanbul in 1881/82, at about 20, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1881/82, with Osman Nuri in the Fen Kalemi in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1884/85. Next came Beyoğlu in 1885/86, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), then Beirut (Beyrut) from 1886 to 1892, with a rise to assistant inspector (Müfettiş Muavini). The annual lists then follow Osman Nuri to Jerusalem (Kudüs) from 1892 to 1895, then Shkodër (İşkodra) from 1898 to 1904. The lists have no entry for 1895 to 1898. The last posts were in Keşan from 1904 to 1907.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to a peak of 1,200 in 1886/87, as Müfettiş Muavini in Beirut, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 23 years the salaries add up to 253,200 kuruş, 1.9 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
