Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1860/61 (AH 1277) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, İbrahim Edhem Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İbrahim Edhem also attended the telegraph school.
Work began in Istanbul in 1877/78, at about 16, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1881/82, places İbrahim Edhem in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1886/87. Next came eight places in 14 years, from Samsun to Yeniköy, with a rise to official (Memur) in 1891/92 and to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1895/96, then a return to Istanbul from 1901 to 1903. İbrahim Edhem then moved to Beykoz in 1903/04. The last posts were in Tarabya again from 1904 to 1907. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to a peak of 600 in 1895/96, as 3. Müdür in Devebagirtan, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 540 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
