Life#
Born in Crete (Girit) in 1859/60 (AH 1276), Huseyin Husnu Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Huseyin Husnu had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote Turkish and spoke Greek (Rum).
Work began in Istanbul in 1873/74, at about 14, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1881/82, with Huseyin Husnu as a sergeant (Çavuş) in Istanbul, where the entries run to 1890/91, with a rise to police commissioner, second class (2. Sınıf Polis Komiseri) in 1890/91. Huseyin Husnu then moved to Crete in 1891/92, as Polis Komiseri, and Adana in 1892/93, then back to Istanbul from 1893 to 1895. The annual lists then follow Huseyin Husnu to Van and Beyoğlu from 1895 to 1899. From 1899 to 1909 every annual entry places Huseyin Husnu in Eyüpsultan.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to a peak of 1,500 in 1891/92, as Polis Komiseri in Crete, when 94 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 28 years the salaries add up to 250,320 kuruş, 1.5 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1908/09. The honours of Huseyin Husnu were a rank (rütbe), the Mecidi and Osmani orders and two medals ("Gumus Liyakat Madalyasi"; "Hicaz demiryolu").
