Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1839/40 (AH 1255), Mehmet Akif Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Mehmet Akif had seven years of schooling, at the Irfaniye Mektebi.
Work began in Istanbul in 1854/55, at about 16, paid from the start, on 500 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1854/55, places Mehmet Akif in Istanbul, the birthplace, as Nizamiye Muhasebecisi, where the entries run to 1890/91, with a rise to 1. Sinif Polis Komiseri in 1877/78 and to chief police commissioner (Başkomiser) in 1879/80. The lists have no entry for 1858 to 1863. Mehmet Akif then moved to Bursa from 1891 to 1897, then back to Istanbul from 1897 to 1899. Next came Sivas in 1899/1900 and Elazığ in 1900/01. The last posts were in Istanbul again from 1901 to 1905. Entries spanning 52 years are rare, reached by only 4 of the 5,211 officials.
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1854/55 to 1,500 in 1891/92, the peak, as Başkomiser in Bursa, when 94 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 47 years of salary come to 448,440 kuruş, 1.5 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1904/05. Mehmet Akif received a rank (rütbe), the Mecidi order and a medal ("Altin Liyakat Madalyasi").
