Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1824/25 (AH 1240), Mehmet Agâh Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "kassam". Schooling took seven years, at the Irfaniye Mektebi.
Work began in the Dahiliye Kalemi in Istanbul in 1839/40, at about 15, on a first salary of 150 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1859/60, with Mehmet Agâh as Deavi Kisedarligi in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1875/76. Next came Üsküdar from 1876 to 1885, with a rise to Bidayet Mahkeme Azasi. The last posts were in Istanbul again from 1885 to 1894, with a rise to Istinaf Mahkemesi Azasi. The lists give Vefat (death) for 1894/95 instead of a title.
The salary went from 950 kuruş a month in 1859/60 to 2,800 in 1885/86, the peak, as Istinaf Mahkemesi Azasi in Istanbul, when 96 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 36 years the salaries add up to 803,400 kuruş, 3.5 times what an official on the median salary earned, a level reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more.
