Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1838/39 (AH 1254), Mustafa Cemal Bey came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Hariciye Naziri". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Unpaid work as a mülazım (apprentice) lasted six years. The annual lists begin in 1859/60, with Mustafa Cemal in the Tanzimat Kalemi in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1885/86, with a rise to Istinaf Mahkemesi Zabit Katibi in 1871/72. The last posts were in Beyoğlu from 1886 to 1895, with a rise to Bidayet Mahkeme Azasi.
